Pregnancy after sleeve gastrectomy (SG) shows no increased maternal or neonatal complications, regardless of timing post-surgery. This finding is crucial for women of childbearing age considering bariatric procedures.
Area of Science:
- Bariatric surgery outcomes
- Reproductive health in obese women
- Maternal-fetal medicine
Background:
- Obesity poses significant risks during pregnancy and labor for women of childbearing age.
- Sleeve gastrectomy (SG) is a common bariatric procedure, necessitating an understanding of its impact on subsequent pregnancies.
Purpose of the Study:
- To analyze pregnancy complications following sleeve gastrectomy (SG).
- To investigate the influence of the time elapsed between SG and conception on maternal and neonatal outcomes.
Main Methods:
- Retrospective descriptive-analytical study of women of childbearing age who underwent SG between 2006 and 2017.
- Patients were categorized into two groups based on pregnancy timing: less than one year (Group A) and greater than one year (Group B) after SG.
- Analysis of 51 pregnancies with complete clinical records.
Main Results:
- No significant differences in preterm birth rates between Group A (28.6%) and Group B (16.7%).
- Group A had no low birth weight (LBW) newborns (mean 3.0 ± 0.4 kg, GA 37.2 ± 2.1 weeks), while Group B reported 8.6% LBW (mean 2.1 ± 0.1 kg, GA 33.3 ± 3.8 weeks).
- Mean time from SG to pregnancy was 30.4 ± 21 months.
Conclusions:
- Pregnancy following sleeve gastrectomy does not appear to be associated with increased maternal or neonatal complications based on the time elapsed since surgery.
- The timing of pregnancy after SG (less than or greater than one year) did not significantly impact outcomes in this cohort.
