    Summary

Campylobacter fetus subspecies jejuni appendicitis is rare but presents like typical appendicitis. Histologic abnormalities are confined to the appendiceal mucosa, differentiating it from phlegmonous appendicitis.

    Area of Science:

    • Gastroenterology
    • Infectious Diseases
    • Surgical Pathology

    Background:

    • Appendicitis is a common surgical emergency.
    • Campylobacter infections are typically associated with enteritis.
    • The role of Campylobacter in appendicitis is not well-defined.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To determine the prevalence of Campylobacter fetus subspecies jejuni-associated appendicitis.
    • To describe the clinical and histological features of this condition.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective analysis of 116 appendectomy specimens using immunohistochemistry.
    • Confirmation of findings with electron microscopy.
    • Review of clinical and histological data from patients with confirmed Campylobacter enteritis.

    Related Experiment Videos

    Main Results:

    • Campylobacter fetus subspecies jejuni infection identified in 3 of 116 appendectomy specimens.
    • Histological abnormalities were limited to the appendiceal mucosa.
    • Clinical presentation mimicked acute appendicitis.

    Conclusions:

    • Campylobacter infection can present as acute appendicitis.
    • Histological examination of appendiceal mucosa is key for diagnosis.
    • This presentation is distinct from acute phlegmonous appendicitis.
