    Background:

    • The relationship between positive affective states and pain/stress modulation is not fully understood.
    • Opioid systems are known to play a role in both reward and pain perception.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the functional relationship between sucrose taste, pain threshold, and distress vocalization in young rats.
    • To determine if opioid pathways mediate the effects of sucrose on pain and stress.

    Main Methods:

    • Two experiments were conducted on isolated 10-day-old albino rats.
    • Experiment 1: Intraoral sucrose infusions were administered, and heat-withdrawal latencies were measured.
    • Experiment 2: Distress vocalizations were recorded during social isolation following sucrose infusions. Naltrexone was used to assess opioid receptor involvement.

    Main Results:

    • Intraoral sucrose infusion significantly increased heat-withdrawal latencies, indicating a higher pain threshold.
    • The sucrose-induced increase in pain threshold was reversible by naltrexone, an opioid antagonist.
    • Sucrose infusions led to a rapid and sustained decrease in distress vocalizations during isolation.

    Conclusions:

    • Sucrose intake activates an opioid-based system that enhances pain thresholds in young rats.
    • This study provides the first evidence of a causal link between the positive affective system (sweet taste) and the systems mediating pain and stress responses.
