Oligodendrocyte transcription factor (OLIG2) is widely expressed in feline ependymoma, unlike in other species. This widespread immunolabeling means OLIG2 is not a reliable marker for distinguishing feline ependymoma from oligodendroglioma.
Area of Science:
- Veterinary Pathology
- Neuro-oncology
- Immunohistochemistry
Background:
- Ependymoma is a common feline glioma, often found in the lateral and third ventricles, with varied histological patterns.
- Oligodendrocyte transcription factor (OLIG2) is typically minimal in ependymomas but is a common marker for other gliomas.
Purpose of the Study:
- To characterize the immunolabeling pattern of OLIG2 in feline ependymoma.
- To evaluate the utility of OLIG2 as a diagnostic marker for feline ependymoma.
Main Methods:
- Immunohistochemistry was performed on 19 feline ependymoma cases.
- OLIG2 and GFAP immunolabeling patterns were analyzed.
- Histologic features, including rosettes and pseudorosettes, were examined.
Main Results:
- Nuclear OLIG2 immunolabeling was present in 17 out of 19 cases, with variable intensity and distribution.
- GFAP immunolabeling was variable and often localized in neoplastic ependymal cells, particularly in rosettes.
- OLIG2 immunolabeling was widespread in feline ependymoma, differing from findings in other species.
Conclusions:
- OLIG2 is widely expressed in feline ependymoma.
- The widespread distribution of OLIG2 in feline ependymoma contrasts with its expression in other species.
- OLIG2 should not be relied upon as a specific marker for feline oligodendroglioma.
