    Summary

Borrelia spirochetes may cause postinfectious arthritis. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) detected Borrelia antibodies in 2% of arthritis patients, suggesting a potential link for unknown cases.

    Area of Science:

    • Immunology
    • Infectious Diseases
    • Rheumatology

    Background:

    • Postinfectious arthritis can be debilitating.
    • Identifying the underlying cause is crucial for effective treatment.
    • Borrelia spirochetes are known pathogens.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the prevalence of Borrelia antibodies in patients with postinfectious arthritis.
    • To determine if Borrelia infection is a potential cause of unexplained arthritis.

    Main Methods:

    • Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to detect antibodies to Borrelia spirochetes.
    • Sera from 298 postinfectious arthritis patients were analyzed.
    • Control groups included healthy individuals, meningitis patients, and multiple sclerosis patients.

    Main Results:

    • Antibodies to Borrelia were found in 2% (5 out of 298) of arthritis patients.
    • Two patients exhibited higher Borrelia antibody titers than previously reported in Borrelia meningitis cases.
    • Elevated titers suggest a potential role for Borrelia in these arthritis cases.

    Conclusions:

    • Borrelia etiology should be considered in patients with reactive or postinfectious arthritis of unknown origin.
    • ELISA is a valuable tool for detecting Borrelia antibodies in arthritis patients.
    • Further research is warranted to confirm the causal link between Borrelia and postinfectious arthritis.
