Male Sexual Response: Erection & Ejaculation

4.6K
Sexual stimulation can take various forms, such as physical touch and visual or auditory cues. When this happens, the parasympathetic reflex in the sacral portion of the spinal cord is activated. This reflex stimulates the release of nitric oxide (NO), which then dilates the arterioles in the penis, increasing blood flow to the erectile tissues - the corpora cavernosa and corpus spongiosum.
The blood filling the erectile tissues compresses the veins, which helps to prevent blood from leaving...

Exercise and Muscle Performance01:27

Exercise and Muscle Performance

1.6K
Exercise induces a range of adaptations in muscle tissue, depending on the type and duration of activity. Such physical training can be broadly categorized into two types: endurance exercises and resistance exercises.
Endurance exercises
Endurance exercises involve running, swimming, or cycling, which require repetitive movements with low force output. When a person engages in endurance exercise, a few noticeable changes occur in their skeletal muscles. For instance, the number of capillaries...

Muscle Recovery and Fatigue01:24

Muscle Recovery and Fatigue

2.5K
Muscle fatigue refers to the decline in a muscle's ability to maintain the force of contraction after prolonged activity. It primarily stems from changes within muscle fibers. Even before experiencing muscle fatigue, one may feel tired and have the urge to stop the activity. This response, known as central fatigue, occurs due to changes in the central nervous system, namely the brain and spinal cord. While there is no single mechanism that induces fatigue, it may serve as a protective...

Disorders of the Male Reproductive System

Men's health issues are increasingly recognized as significant, with several conditions posing common threats. Among these, testicular cancer is especially prevalent in younger men, particularly those aged 20 to 35 years. The disease often manifests as a painless mass in the testicles, sometimes accompanied by a sensation of heaviness or a dull ache.
Prostate disorders are another major concern. These conditions can impair urinary flow due to the prostate's location around the urethra....

Treatment for Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension: Phosphodiesterase Inhibitors

241
Phosphodiesterase 5 (PDE5) inhibitors are potent enzymes that function to hydrolyze cyclic nucleotides to their corresponding 5' monophosphates. Their unique biochemical properties have been applied in treating Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension (PAH).
Among the PDE5 inhibitors, sildenafil (Revatio) stands out as a competitive and selective inhibitor. It operates by elevating cellular levels of cGMP and augmenting signaling through the cGMP-PKG pathway, promoting vasodilation. Upon oral...

Exercise and Cardiac Output

1.3K
Regular physical activity is essential for maintaining cardiovascular health, with aerobic exercises being particularly effective. According to the American Heart Association, 150 minutes of moderate to intense aerobic exercise per week is recommended for a healthy heart. Aerobic activities may include brisk walking, running, bicycling, cross-country skiing, and swimming, ideally performed three to five times per week.
Sustained exercise increases the muscles' oxygen demand, which can be...

Summary

Amateur cycling does not negatively impact erectile function. While cyclists may experience numbness, this did not affect their sexual health outcomes compared to footballers.

Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Sports Medicine
  • Sexual Health

Background:

  • Cycling is a popular activity with potential genitourinary implications.
  • Concerns exist regarding cycling's impact on sexual function.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effect of amateur cycling on erectile function.
  • To compare erectile function in cyclists versus a control group.

Main Methods:

  • A questionnaire study comparing 199 amateur cyclists and 43 footballers.
  • Assessment of sexual comorbidities and practice hours.
  • Utilized the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) questionnaire.

Main Results:

  • No significant difference in IIEF scores between cyclists and footballers.
  • Age and comorbidities negatively impacted IIEF scores in cyclists.
  • Perineal numbness in cyclists did not correlate with lower IIEF scores.

Conclusions:

  • Amateur cycling does not adversely affect erectile function.
  • Perineal numbness is a common cyclist experience but does not impair erectile function.
  • Cycling's impact on sexual health is minimal for amateurs.
