[Selection and training of future surgeons. A survey on Belgian surgical services]

A survey in 47 surgical departments has investigated the selection of applicants for a surgical residency and their education and training. The study indicates that certain factors already endanger the quality of surgical education, that might even worsen during the next years. Most important are the fragmentation of surgical training in numerous departments and the excessive number of surgeons in our country.
