This study introduces novel albumin-based fluorescent sensors for universal pesticide detection. The portable, visual method enables accurate on-site identification of common pesticides, improving environmental and public health monitoring.
Area of Science:
- Analytical Chemistry
- Environmental Science
- Biochemistry
Background:
- Pesticide use poses significant environmental and public health risks.
- Current fluorescence methods for pesticide detection lack universality and are limited to specific compounds.
- Existing methods include enzyme-based assays and indicator displacement assays.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop a universal fluorescence-based method for detecting a wide range of common pesticides.
- To create an array-based system for accurate pesticide identification.
- To enable simple, portable, and visual on-site pesticide determination.
Main Methods:
- Utilized albumin's flexible binding sites to create multicolor host-guest ensembles.
- Developed an array-based sensing platform using these albumin ensembles.
- Investigated the fluorescent response of the ensembles to various pesticides.
Main Results:
- The albumin-based host-guest ensembles exhibited a universal yet distinctive fluorescent response to most common pesticides.
- The array-based system achieved high accuracy in pesticide identification.
- The method demonstrated simplicity, portability, and visual detection capabilities for on-site analysis.
Conclusions:
- Albumin-based host-guest ensembles offer a universal and accurate approach for pesticide detection.
- This strategy expands traditional indicator displacement assays and offers a practical solution for on-site pesticide monitoring.
- The developed method has the potential to significantly improve environmental and public health safety by enabling widespread pesticide surveillance.
