Self-Help Support Groups01:28

Self-Help Support Groups

73
Self-help support groups are voluntary, community-based organizations that provide a platform for individuals with shared concerns to exchange support, insights, and practical strategies for coping with life challenges. Typically led by group members or paraprofessionals, these groups form a cornerstone of mental health care, especially in reaching populations that are underserved by traditional healthcare systems.

In- and Out-Groups01:31

In- and Out-Groups

39.9K
People all belong to a gender, race, age, and social economic group. These groups provide a powerful source of our identity and self-esteem (Tajfel & Turner, 1979) and serve as our in-groups. An in-group is a group that we identify with or see ourselves as belonging to.

Ethnic Identity within a Larger Culture01:27

Ethnic Identity within a Larger Culture

85
Adolescents from ethnic minority backgrounds face a multifaceted journey in forming their identities, shaped by the intersections of cultural expectations and personal exploration. For these adolescents, identity formation involves not only typical developmental challenges but also navigating the perceptions and attitudes of the majority culture. As they grow, adolescents in ethnic minority groups often become increasingly aware of stereotypes, social biases, and discrimination, all of which...

Area of Science:

  • Burn care
  • Psychosocial recovery
  • Health disparities

Background:

  • Racial and ethnic minorities experience disparities in psychosocial outcomes post-burn injury.
  • Peer support groups are beneficial for burn recovery, yet access for underserved populations remains unclear.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine participation rates and interest in outpatient peer support among racial and ethnic minority burn patients.
  • To identify factors associated with participation and interest in peer support groups.

Main Methods:

  • A study was conducted at an urban safety-net hospital and regional burn center with a majority minority patient population.
  • Patients were surveyed on current/past peer support participation, interest in joining, and psychosocial adjustment.
  • Logistic regression models analyzed associations between injury severity, demographics, and peer support interest.

Main Results:

  • Only 4.2% of patients participated in peer support; 30.3% expressed interest in joining.
  • Hispanic patients showed the highest interest (37.0%), while Black patients showed none (0%).
  • Increased burn severity (total body surface area), longer hospital stay, and surgical intervention correlated with interest in peer support.

Conclusions:

  • A significant gap exists between interest in and participation in peer support among minority burn patients.
  • Enhanced access and education on peer support benefits are crucial for underresourced communities.
  • Addressing these factors can help mitigate psychosocial outcome disparities in burn survivors.
