Colonic intramural hematoma, a rare condition, was diagnosed in a cat for the first time. Multimodal imaging was key to identifying the blood clot and guiding treatment for a full recovery.

Background:

  • Colonic intramural hematoma (CIH) is uncommon in both humans and animals.
  • Clinical presentation and diagnosis of CIH in feline patients have not been previously documented.

Observation:

  • An 8-year-old male American shorthair cat presented with acute constipation and anorexia.
  • Diagnostic imaging, including radiography, sonography, and computed tomography, revealed a descending colon mass with heterogeneous contents.
  • Colonoscopy confirmed blood clots within the intramural mass.

Findings:

  • The cat was diagnosed with colonic intramural hematoma.
  • Histopathology revealed mild chronic proctitis without malignancy.
  • The cat recovered fully with supportive medical and surgical treatment and showed no recurrence for over 14 months.
