Summary

Partial shoulder resurfacing significantly improves function in patients with degenerative joint disease. However, implant positioning using cervical-diaphyseal angle (CDA) and retroversion angle (RVA) does not correlate with these functional outcomes.

  • To evaluate the relationship between cervical-diaphyseal angle (CDA) and retroversion angle (RVA) and clinical results.
  • To determine if CDA and RVA are accurate indicators of surgical success in shoulder resurfacing.

Main Methods:

  • A case series of 25 patients undergoing partial shoulder resurfacing was assessed.
  • Range of motion and University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) scores were recorded pre- and postoperatively.
  • Radiographic analysis determined cervical-diaphyseal angle (CDA) and retroversion angle (RVA), comparing them to ideal anatomical standards.

  • Postoperative functional scores (31.5) were significantly higher than preoperative scores (15.5) (p < 0.001).

  • CDA and RVA appear to be inaccurate indicators for predicting surgical success in partial shoulder resurfacing arthroplasty.
