    Summary

Fingerprint ridge patterns, specifically the a-b palmar interdigital ridge count, were studied in the Basque population. Results revealed significant differences between sexes but no differences between hands, with counts falling in the lower range for White populations.

    Area of Science:

    • Anthropometry
    • Dermatoglyphics
    • Human Genetics

    Background:

    • Palmar interdigital ridge counts are a heritable trait used in population studies.
    • Previous research indicates variations in ridge counts across different ethnic groups.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To analyze the a-b palmar interdigital ridge count in a Basque population sample.
    • To investigate potential bimanual and sexual dimorphism in ridge counts within this group.

    Main Methods:

    • A sample of 841 males and 911 females of Basque origin was collected.
    • The a-b palmar interdigital ridge count was systematically measured for each individual.

    Main Results:

    • No significant differences were observed in ridge counts between the left and right hands (bimanual analysis).

    Related Experiment Videos

  • A significant sexual dimorphism was detected, with distinct differences in ridge counts between males and females.
  • The average ridge count for the Basque sample falls within the lower range of variability observed in White populations.
  • Conclusions:

    • The study confirms significant sexual dimorphism in a-b palmar interdigital ridge counts among Basques.
    • The findings suggest that the Basque population exhibits lower ridge counts compared to the general White population average.
    • Dermatoglyphic analysis continues to provide insights into population genetics and human variation.
