    |June 1, 1987

    Area of Science:

    • Ophthalmology
    • Psychiatry
    • Psychology

    Background:

    • Patients with keratoconus are anecdotally reported to have distinct personality traits.
    • Controlled studies investigating these personality characteristics are lacking in medical literature.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate whether keratoconus is associated with specific personality characteristics.
    • To compare personality profiles of keratoconus patients with those of patients suffering from other chronic eye diseases and healthy controls.

    Main Methods:

    • Utilized the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory (MCMI) to assess 20 personality scales in 109 subjects.
    • Subjects were categorized into three age-matched groups: keratoconus patients, patients with other chronic eye diseases, and normal controls.

    Related Experiment Videos

    Main Results:

    • Chronic eye diseases, including keratoconus, affect personality functioning in adults.
    • No specific personality complex unique to keratoconus was identified.
    • Keratoconus patients showed differences from controls similar to other chronic eye disease patients, including being less conforming and more passive-aggressive, paranoid, and hypomanic.
    • Increased disorganized thinking patterns and higher substance abuse indicators were noted in keratoconus patients.

    Conclusions:

    • Personality alterations in keratoconus patients are not unique and resemble those in patients with other chronic eye conditions.
    • The impact of keratoconus on personality may be linked to the disease's onset timing and its interaction with psychosocial development.
