Behavior Modification01:21

Behavior Modification

222
Behavioral approaches have often been criticized for ignoring mental processes and focusing solely on observable behavior. However, these approaches provide an optimistic perspective for individuals seeking to change their behaviors. Rather than concentrating on intrinsic personality traits, behavioral approaches suggest that even longstanding habits can be modified by changing the reward contingencies that maintain them.
A real-world application of operant conditioning principles is applied...

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder01:30

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder

183
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by persistent inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. It affects approximately 5-8% of children globally, with around 60-70% of cases persisting into adulthood. ADHD has significant implications for educational attainment, social interactions, and occupational success.
Diagnostic Criteria and Symptoms
To diagnose ADHD, symptoms must manifest before age 12 and be evident across multiple settings....

Modeling in Therapy01:26

Modeling in Therapy

141
Modeling, a key technique in therapy, uses observational learning to help clients acquire and practice new skills by watching therapists demonstrate desired behaviors. This approach, rooted in Albert Bandura's concept of vicarious learning, plays a significant role in therapeutic interventions for various psychological conditions, including social anxiety, ADHD, and depression.
Participant Modeling
Participant modeling involves therapists demonstrating calm and effective behaviors in...

Operant Conditioning Intervention01:24

Operant Conditioning Intervention

110
Operant conditioning serves as a foundational principle in therapeutic interventions aimed at modifying maladaptive behaviors. Central to this approach is the notion that behaviors, both adaptive and maladaptive, are learned through reinforcement. By analyzing the environmental factors that reinforce problematic behaviors, clinicians can design interventions to weaken these reinforcements and replace maladaptive behaviors with healthier alternatives.
In operant conditioning, behaviors that are...

Behaviorism01:28

Behaviorism

2.7K
The field of behaviorism was pioneered by figures such as Ivan Pavlov, John B. Watson, and B.F. Skinner fundamentally shifted the focus of psychology to the observable and controllable aspects of human and animal behavior. This shift marked a critical evolution in the discipline, emphasizing scientific rigor and experimental methodology.
The core premise of behaviorism is its focus on observable behavior rather than internal thoughts or feelings. This approach argues that true scientific...

Behavior Therapy01:22

Behavior Therapy

104
Behavior therapy incorporates diverse techniques rooted in classical conditioning principles to address maladaptive behaviors and anxiety disorders. These methods aim to reduce avoidance behaviors, foster adaptive coping mechanisms, and alter associations between stimuli and responses, making them effective in a wide range of therapeutic contexts.
Exposure therapy is a cornerstone of behavioral treatment for anxiety disorders. It involves systematic exposure to feared stimuli, either in real...

Area of Science:

  • Neurodevelopmental Disorders
  • Child Psychology
  • Behavioral Therapy

Background:

  • Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a chronic neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity.
  • Children with ADHD often exhibit executive functioning (EF) deficits and poor self-regulation.
  • Mindfulness-based interventions show promise for improving attention and self-regulation in general populations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of a mindfulness intervention combined with behavioral treatment (BT) for elementary-aged children with ADHD.
  • To assess the incremental effects of mindfulness on behavior, task-based executive functioning, and mindful awareness.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized controlled trial was conducted in a summer program setting with 58 children diagnosed with ADHD.
  • Participants were assigned to either a mindfulness plus BT group or a BT-only control group.
  • Outcomes included cognitive tasks for EF, observed child behavior, and parent/child-reported mindful awareness.

Main Results:

  • No significant incremental benefits of adding mindfulness to BT were observed for child behavior.
  • Mindfulness intervention in conjunction with BT did not yield improvements in attention or inhibitory control.
  • Neither parent nor child self-reports indicated enhanced mindful awareness with the combined intervention.

Conclusions:

  • The addition of mindfulness to intensive behavioral treatment did not provide additional benefits for children with ADHD in this study.
  • Current findings suggest that mindfulness may not offer incremental advantages when combined with established behavioral treatments for ADHD.
  • Further research is needed to explore the potential role and optimal delivery of mindfulness interventions for ADHD.
