    Summary

    This study found no evidence for a right-hemisphere mechanism for global stereopsis. Evoked potentials in stroke patients did not support hemispheric specialization for this visual function.

    Background:

    • The role of the right hemisphere in global stereopsis remains debated.
    • Previous studies have presented conflicting evidence regarding hemispheric specialization for stereoscopic vision.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the existence of a right-hemisphere mechanism for global stereopsis.
    • To examine evoked potentials in response to stereoscopic stimuli in patients with unilateral brain lesions.

    Main Methods:

    • Evoked potentials were recorded from scalp sites in stroke patients and controls using dynamic random-dot stereograms.
    • Stimuli varied in disparity and contrast to manipulate monocular cue availability.
    • Latency and amplitude of evoked potentials were analyzed using analyses of variance.

    Main Results:

    • No significant results supported a lateralized mechanism for global stereopsis.
    • The findings contradict some earlier reports on hemispheric specialization for stereopsis.

    Conclusions:

    • The study did not find evidence for a specialized right-hemisphere mechanism for global stereopsis.
    • Current techniques may be insufficient to adequately study the neural basis of global stereopsis.
