A new, non-invasive method accurately measures autonomic nerve conduction velocity (ANCV) using peripheral autonomic surface potential (PASP) recordings. This technique shows promise for diagnosing autonomic neuropathies in standard EMG labs.

    Area of Science:

    • Neurology
    • Autonomic Nervous System Physiology

    Background:

    • Autonomic neuropathies are challenging to diagnose.
    • Current diagnostic methods can be invasive or complex.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To describe a simple, non-invasive technique for measuring autonomic nerve conduction velocity (ANCV).
    • To evaluate the feasibility and comparability of this new method.

    Main Methods:

    • Utilized proximal and distal peripheral autonomic surface potential (PASP) recordings.
    • Measured ANCV in human subjects.

    Main Results:

    • The technique successfully obtained ANCV in 90% of subjects.
    • Measured ANCV values were comparable to those obtained via intraneural recording.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • The method is well-tolerated and simple to perform.
  • Conclusions:

    • This non-invasive PASP recording technique provides reliable ANCV measurements.
    • It offers a practical tool for assessing autonomic neuropathies in standard clinical settings.
