Cytogenetic studies on five species of Pisces from Yugoslavia

The chromosomes of five species of Pisces, viz common carp, chub, tench, grass carp and catfish, were investigated. The diploid chromosome number in the common carp was found to be 98, with 50 meta- to submetacentric chromosomes, 48 subtelo- to telocentric chromosomes, and the arms number (NF) was 148. Chub was found with 2n of 50, consisting of 34 meta- to submetacentric chromosomes and 16 subtelo- to telocentric chromosomes (NF 84). In the case of the grass carp 2n was 48, with 32 meta- to submetacentric chromosomes and 16 subtelo- to telocentric chromosomes (NF 80). Both tench and catfish with 2n of 48 had similar karyotypes, consisting of 30 meta- to submetacentric chromosomes and 18 subtelo- to telocentric chromosomes (NF 78).
