Area of Science:

  • Pediatric Surgery
  • Head and Neck Pathology
  • Dermatology

Background:

  • Submental epidermoid cysts are exceptionally rare congenital lesions.
  • Midline head and neck masses in children warrant thorough investigation due to potential complications.

Observation:

  • A young girl presented with a year-long, gradually enlarging midline submental swelling and six months of odynophagia.
  • Neck ultrasonography revealed a hypoechoic, avascular cystic lesion in the submental region.

Findings:

  • Surgical enucleation was performed, and postoperative histopathology confirmed an epidermoid cyst.
  • This case represents an unusual presentation of a pediatric submental epidermoid cyst.

Implications:

  • Early and accurate diagnosis of pediatric submental masses is crucial for appropriate management.
  • Understanding the rarity and clinical presentation of these cysts aids in surgical planning and patient care.
