Stereotypes, Prejudice, and Discrimination02:55

Stereotypes, Prejudice, and Discrimination

91.3K
Humans are very diverse and although we share many similarities, we also have many differences. The social groups we belong to help form our identities (Tajfel, 1974). These differences may be difficult for some people to reconcile, which may lead to prejudice toward people who are different. Prejudice is a negative attitude and feeling toward an individual based solely on one’s membership in a particular social group (Allport, 1954; Brown, 2010). Prejudice is common against people who...

Obedience01:08

Obedience

33.1K
According to obedience research, we may harm others under the forceful pressures of an authority figure (Milgram, 1974). How about if the inappropriate orders were delivered with less force? The increasing interdependence between nurses and physicians compelled Hofling and his colleagues to explore nurses’ reactions to a potentially harmful medical request made by the perceived authority figure, the doctor (Hofling, Brotzman, Dalrymple, Graves, & Pierce, 1966). In this situation,...

Assessment of Airway, Skin Color, and Use of Accessory Muscles

1.1K
A thorough assessment of respiratory health is paramount in clinical settings to identify and manage respiratory distress and ensure adequate oxygenation. This article elaborates on the critical aspects of respiratory evaluation, including airway assessment, skin color examination, and the observation of accessory muscle use, which are integral to effectively diagnosing and managing patients with respiratory conditions.
Introduction
The initial evaluation of a patient's respiratory system...

Surveys02:16

Surveys

15.2K
Often, psychologists develop surveys as a means of gathering data. Surveys are lists of questions to be answered by research participants, and can be delivered as paper-and-pencil questionnaires, administered electronically, or conducted verbally. Generally, the survey itself can be completed in a short time, and the ease of administering a survey makes it easy to collect data from a large number of people.

Psychosurgery01:30

Psychosurgery

101
Psychosurgery, the surgical alteration or permanent removal of brain tissue to alleviate severe psychological conditions, stands as one of the most radical and controversial treatments in the history of mental health care. Its development and application have evolved significantly, marked by dramatic shifts in scientific understanding and ethical perspectives.
Historical Development of Psychosurgery
In the 1930s, Portuguese neurologist Antonio Egas Moniz introduced a surgical procedure designed...

Radical Formation: Elimination00:51

Radical Formation: Elimination

1.8K
Another method of radical formation is the elimination process. It is the opposite of the addition route and is driven by the instability of the radical. For example, as depicted in Figure 1, dibenzoyl peroxide yields a pair of unstable radicals upon homolysis. Given its instability, this radical spontaneously undergoes elimination via a C–C bond cleavage to form a relatively more stable phenyl radical. The mechanism involves cleavage of the bond between the α and β positions...

Summary

Integrating diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) into surgical conferences significantly increased discussions on disparities. This approach broadens engagement and academic recognition for DEI efforts in surgery.

Area of Science:

  • Medical Education
  • Surgical Outcomes
  • Health Equity

Background:

  • Surgical outcome disparities disproportionately affect racial/ethnic minorities.
  • Most surgeons do not acknowledge existing disparities.
  • Current diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) education in surgery is often limited in scope and depth.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the impact of integrating DEI education into a general surgery department's conferences.
  • To increase awareness and engagement with DEI topics within surgical departments.

Main Methods:

  • A DEI curriculum was implemented within a general surgery department.
  • DEI programming was incorporated into morbidity and mortality (M&M) conferences and grand rounds (GR).

Main Results:

  • DEI topics significantly increased at M&M (0% to 27.3%) and GR (0% to 18.4%) after curriculum implementation.
  • Non-underrepresented minorities (URMs) presented the majority of DEI M&Ms (88.89%).
  • URMs presented most DEI GR sessions (55%).

Conclusions:

  • Structured integration of DEI into surgical conferences effectively increases awareness of disparities.
  • This approach enhances DEI engagement and provides academic recognition for DEI initiatives.
  • DEI initiatives can be practically integrated into existing departmental conferences.
