Conduct Disorder

104
Conduct disorder is a complex mental health diagnosis characterized by a repetitive and persistent pattern of behavior that violates societal norms, the rights of others, or age-appropriate rules. Socioemotional Experience and Gender Development01:30

Socioemotional Experience and Gender Development

77
Social-emotional experiences and cultural influences play significant roles in shaping gender development. During middle childhood, from ages 6 to 11, peer groups become dominant in reinforcing gender norms. Children in this age group often align with same-gender peer groups, which actively encourage behaviors that conform to traditional gender roles. For instance, boys may be discouraged from engaging in activities perceived as feminine, reinforcing culturally dictated norms about masculinity...

They can include symptoms such as rapid heart rate, shortness of breath, chest pain, trembling, sweating, dizziness, and a sense of helplessness. During a panic attack, individuals may feel as though they are experiencing a heart attack or are in a...

Ethnic Identity within a Larger Culture

84
Adolescents from ethnic minority backgrounds face a multifaceted journey in forming their identities, shaped by the intersections of cultural expectations and personal exploration. For these adolescents, identity formation involves not only typical developmental challenges but also navigating the perceptions and attitudes of the majority culture. As they grow, adolescents in ethnic minority groups often become increasingly aware of stereotypes, social biases, and discrimination, all of which...

Self-Presentation: Self-Monitoring and Self-Handicapping

40.0K
People can go to great lengths to protect their self-image and present themselves in ways that they want others to see them. Sociologist Erving Goffman presented the idea that a person is like an actor on a stage. Calling his theory dramaturgy, Goffman believed that we use “impression management” to present ourselves to others as we hope to be perceived. Each situation is a new scene, and individuals perform different roles depending on who is present (Goffman, 1959). Think about...

Area of Science:

  • Adolescent Health
  • Behavioral Science
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Previous research on adolescent gambling differences focused on psychological and social factors.
  • This study aimed to create separate risk factor models for male and female adolescent gambling.
  • Environmental, psychological, behavioral, and socio-economic factors were considered.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop distinct risk factor models for male and female adolescent gambling.
  • To identify gender-specific predictors of gambling behavior in adolescents.
  • To inform targeted prevention and intervention strategies.

Main Methods:

  • A nationwide survey of 34,922 Italian adolescents (15-19 years old) was conducted in 2014.
  • The Survey of Gambling and Health - Revised (SOGS-RA) questionnaire measured gambling behavior.
  • Logistic regression stratified by gender was used to analyze risk factors.

Main Results:

  • Gambling prevalence was higher in males than females.
  • Shared risk factors included internet use, sports, fighting, unprotected sex, alcohol use, poor teacher relationships, high pocket money, and family gambling history.
  • Gender-specific factors for boys included poor school marks, ED visits, smoking, poor father relationships, and lower family income.
  • Gender-specific factors for girls included previous injury/accident and a mother who gambles; low psychological distress was protective for girls.

Conclusions:

  • Gender-specific differences in adolescent gambling risk factors are significant.
  • Tailored, gender-sensitive approaches are needed for gambling prevention and education.
  • Multifaceted programs addressing substance use should integrate gambling prevention with a gender perspective.
