Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate adult patients with cytopenia and low serum copper levels.
  • To determine the clinical characteristics and outcomes of copper deficiency-induced cytopenia.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of clinical data from March 2014 to March 2021.
  • Analysis of patient demographics, cytopenia severity, bone marrow findings, and treatment responses.

Main Results:

  • Fifteen patients with cytopenia due to copper deficiency were identified.
  • Most patients presented with bicytopenia or pancytopenia.
  • Bone marrow examinations revealed features consistent with copper deficiency or myelodysplastic syndrome.
  • Treatment with copper supplementation resulted in normalized copper levels and hematological improvement in a majority of patients.

Conclusions:

  • Copper deficiency is more prevalent than previously thought.
  • It should be considered in the differential diagnosis of unexplained cytopenia.
  • Timely diagnosis and appropriate management, including copper repletion, are crucial for patient recovery.
