Background:

  • Transient global amnesia (TGA) is characterized by sudden, temporary memory loss and temporal disorientation.
  • The precise neurophysiological mechanisms underlying time distortion in TGA remain unclear.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate altered time perception in patients experiencing Transient Global Amnesia (TGA).
  • To explore potential correlations between TGA, time distortion, and neuroimaging findings.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 30 TGA patients and a control group underwent time perception tasks (time production and comparison).
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans were analyzed for hippocampal abnormalities.
  • Patient history regarding Valsalva maneuver and pre-attack stress factors was collected.

Main Results:

  • TGA patients consistently underestimated time intervals in the time production task (p < 0.05).
  • Patients with TGA performed significantly worse on the time comparison task compared to controls (p = 0.006).
  • Hippocampal hyperintensity was observed in 46.67% of TGA patients; 46% reported Valsalva maneuver history, and 70% experienced pre-attack stress.

Conclusions:

  • This study provides the first evidence of altered time perception in TGA patients.
  • Findings suggest a link between TGA and impaired time processing, potentially related to hippocampal function.
  • Further research is needed to fully elucidate the neurophysiological basis of time distortion in TGA.
