Area of Science:

  • Plastic Surgery
  • Medical Imaging
  • Surgical Technology

Background:

  • Accurate breast volume estimation and implant sizing are critical for symmetrical outcomes in breast surgery.
  • Three-dimensional surface imaging (3DSI) enhances understanding of breast shape and asymmetry preoperatively.
  • Intraoperative application of 3DSI for real-time decision-making has been limited.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To validate the intraoperative use of a portable 3D surface imaging device.
  • To assess its efficacy as an objective tool for measuring volumetric changes during breast augmentation.
  • To compare intraoperative measurements with established reference systems.

Main Methods:

  • Bilateral submuscular breast augmentation patients were enrolled.
  • A portable 3D surface imaging device (Sense 3D scanner) was used intraoperatively.
  • Digital breast volumes were compared to known implant volumes and pre/postoperative reference scans.

Main Results:

  • Eighty breasts were successfully imaged intraoperatively.
  • No significant difference was found between intraoperative and outpatient 3DSI breast volumes.
  • Intraoperative volumetric changes correlated well with known implant volumes (p=0.124).

Conclusions:

  • Intraoperative 3DSI provides objective data for breast augmentation.
  • This technique shows high correlation for volumetric changes.
  • It may improve implant selection, especially for asymmetrical breasts.
