Chronic Pharyngitis01:23

Chronic Pharyngitis

4.6K
Chronic pharyngitis refers to persistent inflammation of the pharyngial mucosa.
Etiology
It often arises from persistent viral or bacterial infections affecting sinuses and tonsils.
Additional contributing factors include inadequate dental hygiene, mouth breathing, recurring tonsillitis, allergic rhinitis, laryngopharyngeal reflux, and exposure to smoke, chemicals, and other environmental pollutants. Allergic reactions to pollen, mold, and pet dander, chronic cough, excessive voice usage,...

Summary

Complete surgical resection of lateral neck cysts (LNC) alone is sufficient. This approach effectively prevents recurrence and postoperative infections, making additional tonsillectomy unnecessary.

Area of Science:

  • Otolaryngology
  • Surgical Pathology
  • Head and Neck Surgery

Background:

  • Lateral neck cysts (LNC) have multiple proposed etiologies.
  • Current surgical practice sometimes includes ipsilateral tonsillectomy and tract dissection alongside LNC resection.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the outcomes of patients undergoing LNC resection only.
  • To determine if LNC resection alone is sufficient to prevent complications and recurrence.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 126 patients who underwent LNC resection between 2004 and 2017.
  • Data collected via clinic database and structured telephone interviews.
  • Histological confirmation of LNC diagnosis.

Main Results:

  • No patients experienced recurrent pharyngitis, tonsillitis, peritonsillar infections, neck phlegmon, or neck abscess.
  • No recurrence of LNC was reported during a median follow-up of 7 years.
  • Mean age at operation was 38 years.

Conclusions:

  • Complete resection of lateral neck cysts is adequate for preventing postoperative infections.
  • Ipsilateral tonsillectomy and tract dissection are not routinely required for LNC surgery.
  • LNC resection alone is a sufficient surgical strategy.
