    Area of Science:

    • Biomedical Science
    • Nuclear Medicine
    • Animal Research

    Background:

    • Ferrokinetic studies are crucial for understanding iron metabolism.
    • Traditional methods often rely on radioactive iron isotopes, which pose handling and disposal challenges.
    • Stable iron isotopes offer a safer alternative for in vivo studies.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To develop and validate a novel methodology for ferrokinetic studies using stable iron isotopes.
    • To determine fractional plasma clearance and intestinal iron absorption in rabbits.
    • To compare the accuracy of stable iron isotope measurements with traditional radioactive methods.

    Main Methods:

    • Administration of iron stable isotopes (58Fe intravenously, 57Fe orally) to rabbits.
    • Utilized a double tracer technique for simultaneous measurement.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • Analyzed iron isotope content in plasma samples using proton nuclear activation.
  • Compared results with those obtained using radioactive iron isotopes (55Fe and 59Fe).
  • Main Results:

    • Successfully developed a methodology for ferrokinetic studies using stable iron isotopes.
    • Fractional plasma clearance and intestinal iron absorption were accurately determined in rabbits.
    • Results obtained with stable isotopes showed satisfactory agreement with radioactive isotopes.

    Conclusions:

    • Stable iron isotopes provide a reliable and safe alternative for ferrokinetic studies.
    • The developed methodology is effective for assessing iron metabolism in animal models.
    • This approach has potential applications in clinical settings for iron status assessment.
