Surveys02:16

Surveys

15.2K
Often, psychologists develop surveys as a means of gathering data. Surveys are lists of questions to be answered by research participants, and can be delivered as paper-and-pencil questionnaires, administered electronically, or conducted verbally. Generally, the survey itself can be completed in a short time, and the ease of administering a survey makes it easy to collect data from a large number of people.

Guidelines for Writing Outcome

When developing expected outcomes for a patient care plan, the nurse should adhere to the following recommendations:
Patient outcomes reflect the patient's response to the goal rather than what the nurse aims to achieve. Terminology should be observable and measurable to avoid the reader's interpretation. The desired outcome should be realistic and achievable in the designated care timeframe. Expected outcomes should align with adjunctive therapies. The outcome should enhance care...

Communication01:03

Communication

7.8K
Communication between two animals occurs when one animal transmits an information signal that causes a change in the animal that receives the information. Organisms communicate with one another in a host of different ways. Signals can be auditory, chemical, visual, tactile, or a combination of these. Communication is a critical behavioral adaptation that promotes survival, growth, and reproduction.

Non-equilibrium in the Cell

4.8K
An important concept in studying metabolism and energy is that of chemical equilibrium. Most chemical reactions are reversible. They can proceed in both directions, releasing energy into their environment in one direction, and absorbing it from the environment in the other direction. The same is true for the chemical reactions involved in cell metabolism, such as the breaking down and building up of proteins into and from individual amino acids, respectively. Reactants within a closed system...

There are many research methods available to psychologists in their efforts to understand, describe, and explain behavior and the cognitive and biological processes that underlie it.

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Mental Health Interventions
  • Digital Health

Background:

  • Limited research exists on combining expressive and positive writing interventions.
  • The role of ambivalence toward change in writing-based interventions is under-explored.
  • Ambivalence toward change, a common obstacle in psychotherapy, is linked to successful outcomes upon resolution.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To test the efficacy of a combined expressive and positive writing intervention delivered online.
  • To improve university students' mental health.
  • To explore ambivalence toward change as a potential mediator of intervention effects.

Main Methods:

  • 172 university students were randomly assigned to an experimental or control group.
  • The experimental group completed four daily writing tasks focused on a current problem.
  • Assessments included measures of anxiety, depression, rumination, ambivalence toward change, distress, and wellbeing at baseline, posttest, and follow-up.

Main Results:

  • The experimental group showed significant reductions in ambivalence toward change and rumination compared to the control group, with effects sustained at follow-up.
  • Within the experimental group, ambivalence toward change, rumination, and distress decreased significantly throughout the intervention.
  • Exploratory analysis indicated that reduced ambivalence toward change partially mediated improvements in rumination and distress.

Conclusions:

  • A combined expressive and positive writing intervention can effectively reduce ambivalence toward change and rumination.
  • Addressing ambivalence toward change early in the intervention may facilitate subsequent reductions in rumination and distress.
  • Further research is needed to replicate findings and identify specific intervention components.
