Abstract:
The nurse practitioner has been a strong proponent of health promotion and primary and secondary disease prevention since the inception of the role. Preventive health care has been the subject of ongoing extensive research for the past 15 years. This article reviews the findings of recent major studies and the recommendations of key authorities concerning the costs, risks and benefits of various screening procedures for the adult population. The article presents an updated health-promotion schedule for the primary care provider based upon the complex and evolving theories of preventive health care.
