Area of Science:

  • Dentistry
  • Dental Materials Science
  • Aesthetic Dentistry

Background:

  • In-office teeth bleaching using light activation is a popular cosmetic dental procedure.
  • Long-term color stability after bleaching is crucial for patient satisfaction.
  • Objective color measurement methods are essential for reliable assessment of bleaching outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the long-term color change of teeth bleached with light-activated 25% hydrogen peroxide.
  • To compare two objective color measurement approaches: spectrophotometry and digital photography.
  • To assess color stability and potential rebound after two years.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective clinical study involving 30 participants using 25% hydrogen peroxide gel with LED light activation.
  • Tooth color assessed using CIEL*a*b* values via spectrophotometer (Spectroshade) and digital photography (Adobe Photoshop).
  • Color difference (ΔE) calculated and analyzed at baseline, post-bleaching, 1 week, 1 year, and 2 years.

Main Results:

  • Both spectrophotometry and digital photography detected significant color regression (p < 0.05) after 1 and 2 years.
  • Spectrophotometry recorded greater color difference (ΔE) values compared to digital photography (p < 0.05).
  • Both methods successfully identified color rebound following light-activated bleaching.

Conclusions:

  • Light-activated 25% hydrogen peroxide bleaching demonstrates color regression over two years.
  • Digital photographic analysis is a viable method for assessing color change in teeth bleaching.
  • Objective color measurement is critical for evaluating the longevity of bleaching results.
