Micronutrients and Renal Outcomes: A Prospective Cohort Study

Higher serum selenium and zinc levels are linked to better kidney function and slower progression to end-stage renal disease (ESRD) in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients. Zinc may independently predict improved renal survival.

- Serum Zn and Se levels positively correlated with renal function (p=0.005 and p=0.006, respectively).
- Time to ESRD was significantly longer in patients with higher Zn and Se levels (p < 0.001).
- Higher Zn levels independently predicted a lower risk of ESRD (HR=0.450, p=0.019).
Conclusions:
- Serum selenium and zinc concentrations are positively associated with renal function and improved renal outcomes.
- Elevated serum zinc levels may independently predict better renal survival in CKD patients.
