Summary

Dentists accurately estimated patient anxiety, with better empathic accuracy linked to greater patient reassurance. However, high patient anxiety made accurate assessment more challenging for dentists.

Background:

Effective communication and empathy are crucial in dentistry.
Understanding patient anxiety levels is vital for providing optimal care.
Dentists' ability to perceive patient emotions, known as empathic accuracy, impacts the patient experience.

Purpose of the Study:

To assess dentists' accuracy in estimating patient anxiety during dental procedures.
To examine the relationship between dentists' empathic accuracy and patients' reported feelings of reassurance.

Main Methods:

A cross-sectional study involving 177 adult patients and 10 dentists across 3 dental offices.
Patients and dentists used a 100-point visual analogue scale (VAS) to report and estimate anxiety levels.
Empathic accuracy was calculated as the absolute difference between patient-reported and dentist-estimated anxiety.

Main Results:

Good agreement was observed between dentists' anxiety assessments and patient reports (ICC = 0.63).
A positive correlation was found between empathic accuracy and patient-reported reassurance (r = 0.15).
Empathic accuracy showed a negative correlation with patient anxiety scores (r = -0.23).

Conclusions:

Enhanced empathic accuracy in dentists is associated with increased patient reassurance.
Training dental professionals in empathic accuracy may improve patient comfort and trust.
Dentists face challenges in accurately assessing anxiety in highly anxious patients, potentially hindering optimal support.
