    Background:

    • Recurrent or metastatic renal cell carcinoma (RCC) has a poor prognosis with limited response to hormonal therapy or chemotherapy.
    • Existing treatments offer minimal impact on overall survival for advanced RCC.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy of interferon therapy in patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma.
    • To review response rates and identify factors influencing patient responsiveness to interferon.

    Main Methods:

    • Systematic review of 12 series evaluating partially purified and recombinant interferons in metastatic RCC.
    • Analysis of response rates, including complete and partial responses.
    • Identification of patient characteristics associated with potential responsiveness.

    Main Results:

    • Interferon therapy yielded response rates of 5% to 27%, with a pooled complete and partial response rate of 16% (95% CI: 13% to 19%).
