Modeling in Therapy01:26

Modeling in Therapy

141
Modeling, a key technique in therapy, uses observational learning to help clients acquire and practice new skills by watching therapists demonstrate desired behaviors. This approach, rooted in Albert Bandura's concept of vicarious learning, plays a significant role in therapeutic interventions for various psychological conditions, including social anxiety, ADHD, and depression.

Sensory Modalities01:15

Sensory Modalities

1.5K
Sensation typically is the process by which the sensory receptors and sense organs detect stimuli from the internal and external environment and transmit this information to the central nervous system for processing.
General senses refer to the broad category of sensory information detected by receptors in the body and can be further grouped into somatic and visceral senses. Somatic sensations include touch, pressure, temperature, and pain and are essential for navigating our environment and...

What is a Sensory System?01:31

What is a Sensory System?

96.1K
Sensory systems detect stimuli—such as light and sound waves—and transduce them into neural signals that can be interpreted by the nervous system. In addition to external stimuli detected by the senses, some sensory systems detect internal stimuli—such as the proprioceptors in muscles and tendons that send feedback about limb position.

Autism Spectrum Disorder01:19

Autism Spectrum Disorder

197
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition marked by persistent deficits in social communication and interaction alongside restrictive and repetitive behaviors or interests. ASD is sometimes accompanied by intellectual impairment.
These core symptoms manifest differently among individuals, ranging from mild to severe. The disorder's complexity extends beyond its clinical presentation, encompassing a diverse range of biological, cognitive, and sociocultural influences.

Sensory Perception: Organization of the Somatosensory System

5.3K
The somatosensory system is the central and peripheral nervous system component that senses and processes touch, pressure, pain, temperature, and body position or proprioception. The process of sensation takes place at three levels:
The receptor level:
The receptor level is the first stage of sensation. It involves the detection of a stimulus by specialized sensory receptors. The stimulus must arrive within the receptor's receptive field. Next, the receptor converts the energy of the...

Behavior Therapy01:22

Behavior Therapy

103
Behavior therapy incorporates diverse techniques rooted in classical conditioning principles to address maladaptive behaviors and anxiety disorders. These methods aim to reduce avoidance behaviors, foster adaptive coping mechanisms, and alter associations between stimuli and responses, making them effective in a wide range of therapeutic contexts.
Exposure therapy is a cornerstone of behavioral treatment for anxiety disorders. It involves systematic exposure to feared stimuli, either in real...

Summary

A revised parent guidebook for Ayres Sensory Integration® (ASI) intervention was developed and found acceptable by ASI experts, occupational therapy practitioners, and parents of children with autism. This supports its readiness for further testing and use.

Area of Science:

  • Occupational therapy
  • Sensory integration
  • Autism intervention

Background:

  • Ayres Sensory Integration® (ASI) is an evidence-based occupational therapy intervention.
  • Parent education and participation are crucial components of ASI intervention.
  • Published guidelines for parent education in ASI are currently lacking.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To gather stakeholder input on a revised parent education guidebook for ASI intervention.
  • To refine the parent guidebook based on expert, practitioner, and parent feedback.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional survey design was employed.
  • Online surveys were distributed to key stakeholders.
  • Participants included ASI experts, occupational therapy practitioners, and parents of children with autism.

Main Results:

  • ASI experts affirmed the guidebook's consistency with ASI principles.
  • Occupational therapy practitioners found the guidebook clinically useful.
  • Parents reported the guidebook as both useful and clear.

Conclusions:

  • The parent guidebook for ASI intervention is deemed ready for further evaluation and implementation.
  • This study contributes knowledge translation and best practice strategies to parent education within ASI.
  • Evidence supports the acceptability of the parent guidebook among experts, clinicians, and parents.
