Implementing an operating room (OR) relay strategy improved efficiency by reducing turnover time (TOT). This communication enhancement in the OR led to significant time savings and reduced variability in patient readiness.
Area of Science:
- Healthcare Management
- Quality Improvement
- Surgical Operations
Background:
- Operating room (OR) management is critical for healthcare revenue.
- Communication breakdowns are a common cause of OR delays.
- Improving OR efficiency can increase healthcare revenues.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the impact of an OR relay strategy on turnover time (TOT).
- To assess the effectiveness of enhanced communication in reducing OR delays.
Main Methods:
- A quality improvement project was conducted.
- An intervention group used a certified registered nurse anaesthetist (CRNA) relaying information via Microsoft Teams chat.
- Turnover time (TOT) for the control group was recorded from the electronic anaesthesia record system.
Main Results:
- Analysis of 636 turnovers revealed that the OR relay strategy decreased TOT.
- Statistically significant decreases in TOT were observed for three ORs and the overall system.
- Reduced variability in TOT was noted for the overall OR and most individual ORs.
Conclusions:
- The OR relay strategy positively impacts TOT.
- Enhanced communication through an OR relay strategy can improve OR efficiency.

Overcurrent Relays
Instantaneous overcurrent relays activate immediately when the input current exceeds a predetermined value, known as the pickup current, instantly energizing the circuit breaker trip coil. This rapid response is vital for addressing severe faults quickly.
