Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between various electroencephalogram (EEG) entropy indices and depression severity.
  • To explore potential differences in brain mechanisms between depression, anxiety, and frustration.

Main Methods:

  • 42 participants (aged 20-25) completed psychological assessments (Beck Depression Inventory, Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, Wasserman Frustration Tolerance Test).
  • EEG data were recorded from 14 leads with eyes open and closed.
  • Four EEG entropy indices (Shannon, sample, permutation, recurrent) were calculated and analyzed using factor analysis.

Main Results:

  • Significant negative correlations were observed between all EEG entropy indices and the somatic depression scale (Beck2) and its normalized ratio.
  • No significant correlations were found between EEG entropy and anxiety or frustration scores.
  • These findings suggest distinct neural mechanisms underlying depression compared to anxiety and frustration.

  • A negative correlation between EEG entropy and somatic depression indicates that individuals with more complex and unpredictable brain activity exhibit greater resilience to the physical symptoms of depression.
  • Higher information processing capacity in the brain may facilitate flexible responses to challenging circumstances, mitigating depressive manifestations.
