Step-Growth Polymerization: Overview

3.6K
Step-growth or condensation polymerization is a stepwise reaction of bi or multifunctional monomers to form long-chain polymers. As all the monomers are reactive, most of the monomers are consumed at the early stages of the reaction to form small chains of reactive oligomers, which then combine to form long polymer chains in the late stages. Hence, the reaction has to proceed for a long time to achieve high molecular weight polymers.

Area of Science:

  • Polymer Processing
  • Industrial Automation
  • Data Communication Systems

Background:

  • Traditional server-client protocols limit flexible data exchange in industrial settings.
  • Polymer processing machines generate substantial data that requires efficient transmission.
  • Remote monitoring and data logging are crucial for process optimization and quality control.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop a flexible and scalable data communication structure for polymer processing machines.
  • To implement a publisher-subscriber model using Message Queuing Telemetry Transport (MQTT) for enhanced data exchange.
  • To enable remote data acquisition and monitoring from conventional processing equipment.

Main Methods:

  • Employed the Message Queuing Telemetry Transport (MQTT) protocol, a publisher-subscriber based system, over TCP/IP.
  • Developed a system where equipment and sensors publish data to a central message broker.
  • Implemented subscriber applications to monitor and store process data relayed by the broker.

Main Results:

  • Successfully established a flexible data communication system for polymer processing.
  • Demonstrated the ability to measure and record processing data from conventional equipment via internet communication.
  • Validated the system's effectiveness on a film extrusion line, showing efficient data relay from publishers to subscribers.

Conclusions:

  • The MQTT-based publisher-subscriber protocol offers a flexible alternative to server-client models for industrial data communication.
  • The implemented system facilitates seamless data flow between multiple publishers and subscribers in a polymer processing environment.
  • The successful deployment on a film extrusion line confirms the system's practical applicability and effectiveness for remote data management.
