Area of Science:

  • Neurosurgery
  • Medical Robotics
  • Surgical Navigation

Background:

  • Frame-based stereotactic biopsy is a standard neurosurgical procedure.
  • Robotic devices are increasingly being adopted in neurosurgery.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the efficacy, accuracy, and complication rates of SINO surgical robot-assisted frameless brain biopsy versus standard frame-based stereotactic biopsy.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 151 patients undergoing stereotactic biopsy.
  • Comparison between frame-based (n=47) and SINO robot-assisted (n=104) groups.
  • Data collected: diagnostic yield, operation time, accuracy (entry/target point error), and complications.

Main Results:

  • No significant difference in diagnostic yield (95.74% vs. 98.08%).
  • SINO robot-assisted group had significantly shorter operation times (29.36 min vs. 50.57 min).
  • SINO robot-assisted group showed significantly lower entry point error (0.92 mm vs. 1.33 mm) and target point error (1.10 mm vs. 1.63 mm).
  • No significant difference in postoperative complications.

Conclusions:

  • SINO surgical robot-assisted brain biopsy is efficient, accurate, and safe.
  • It is a comparable alternative to frame-based stereotactic biopsy in neurosurgery.
