Summary

Orthodontic treatment impacts facial esthetics by altering soft tissues. Incompetent lips showed more thinning and retraction, while thicker lips experienced greater length increase after incisor retraction.

Background:

  • Facial esthetics are a primary driver for orthodontic treatment.
  • Soft tissue response to tooth movement during orthodontics varies significantly.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze soft tissue response to orthodontic tooth movement.
  • To compare soft tissue changes based on lip thickness and competence.

Main Methods:

  • Cross-sectional study of 37 patients with Class I and II Div 1 malocclusion post-maxillary first premolar extraction.
  • Lateral cephalometric radiographs analyzed pre- and post-treatment.
  • Pearson correlation and independent sample t-tests used for statistical analysis.

Main Results:

  • Significant associations found between incisor retraction and lip base retraction, thinning, and vermilion retraction.
  • Incompetent lips showed significantly more thinning and vermilion retraction.
  • Thicker lips exhibited a significant increase in lip length (AB).

Conclusions:

  • Lip retraction and thinning were more pronounced in patients with incompetent lips.
  • Increased lip length (AB) was observed in patients with thicker lips.
  • Incisor movement strongly correlated with lip base and vermilion changes in all lip types.
