Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the quality of colonoscopy procedures in Egypt using 13 predefined indicators.
  • To identify areas of strength and areas needing improvement in Egyptian colonoscopy practices.

Main Methods:

  • A multicenter prospective study involving 1,006 colonoscopies conducted between July and December 2020.
  • Evaluation of 13 quality indicators including indications, preparation, sedation, cecal intubation rate (CIR), withdrawal time, adenoma detection rate (ADR), complications, documentation, and infection control.

Main Results:

  • All centers met indicators for appropriate indications, preprocedure assessment, informed consent, and automated sterilization.
  • High cecal intubation rates (95.4%) and low complication rates (0.1%) were observed.
  • Areas for improvement include photographic documentation (57%), postprocedure recovery room (57%), infection control checks (71%), adequate bowel preparation (61%), and adenoma detection rate (15%).

Conclusions:

  • Egyptian colonoscopy practice shows strengths in high cecal intubation rates and low complication rates.
  • Improvements are recommended in adenoma detection rates, bowel cleansing quality, and infection control measures to enhance overall colonoscopy quality.
