Children with attention-deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) frequently experience sleep disorders, with higher ADHD symptom scores correlating to more severe sleep issues. Improving sleep through interventions can help reduce ADHD symptom severity in children.
Area of Science:
- Pediatric Neurology
- Sleep Medicine
- Child Psychology
Background:
- Attention-deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder in children.
- Sleep disturbances are frequently reported in children, but their specific relationship with ADHD requires further investigation.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the correlation between sleep disorders and ADHD in a pediatric population.
- To determine if sleep disorder severity influences ADHD symptom presentation.
Main Methods:
- A study involving 100 Chinese children (mean age 8.77 years) assessed sleep disturbances using the Children's Sleep Disturbance Scale (SDSC) and ADHD symptoms via the Swanson Nolan and Pelham Version IV Scale (SNAP-IV).
- Statistical analyses, including comparisons and multiple linear regression, were employed to examine the relationship between SDSC and SNAP-IV scores.
Main Results:
- Children with ADHD exhibited significantly higher scores on the SDSC, Arousal Disorder (AD), and Sleep Breathing Disorder (SBD) scales compared to those without ADHD.
- A moderate positive correlation (r = 0.486) was found between SDSC and SNAP-IV scores, indicating that greater sleep disturbance is associated with more severe ADHD symptoms.
- AD and Sleep-Wake Transition Disorder (SWTD) scores significantly predicted SNAP-IV scores, suggesting specific sleep issues contribute to ADHD symptoms.
Conclusions:
- Children diagnosed with ADHD are highly susceptible to sleep disorders.
- The severity of ADHD symptoms is directly linked to the presence and severity of sleep problems.
- Behavioral sleep interventions hold potential for mitigating ADHD symptom severity by addressing underlying sleep disturbances.
