    Summary

    Mitral valve prolapse (MVP) and aortic valve prolapse (AVP) are not solely caused by myxomatous degeneration. Postinflammatory changes, including those from rheumatic fever, also contribute to these valvular conditions.

    Background:

    • Mitral valve prolapse (MVP) and aortic valve prolapse (AVP) are common valvular heart conditions.
    • Myxomatous degeneration is traditionally considered the primary cause of these prolapses.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To reevaluate the causes of mitral valve prolapse (MVP) and aortic valve prolapse (AVP).
    • To investigate the role of postinflammatory changes in valvular prolapse.

    Main Methods:

    • Review of 42 surgical cases of prolapsed mitral and/or aortic valves.
    • Microscopic examination to identify myxomatous degeneration and postinflammatory changes.
    • Correlation of findings with patient history, including rheumatic fever.

  • Postinflammatory changes, termed "postinflammatory valve prolapse" (PIVP), were identified in 22 patients.

    • Valvular prolapse, including MVP and AVP, can result from both myxomatous degeneration and postinflammatory changes.
    • Postinflammatory changes, potentially linked to rheumatic fever, represent a significant cause of valvular prolapse.
    • The term "postinflammatory valve prolapse" (PIVP) is introduced to describe valves affected by these inflammatory processes.
