Percutaneous nephrostomy (PCN) is a safe and effective procedure for managing complicated urinary tract infections with obstructed drainage. This study found low complication rates in patients undergoing PCN for infections.
Area of Science:
- Urology
- Infectious Diseases
Background:
- Percutaneous nephrostomy (PCN) is a crucial intervention for managing urinary tract obstructions.
- Understanding indications and complications is vital for patient care.
Purpose of the Study:
- To determine indications for PCN in patients with urinary tract infections (UTIs).
- To assess complications associated with PCN in these patients.
Main Methods:
- Retrospective analysis of 226 inpatient cases over five years.
- Data collected included indications, complications, duration, antibiotics, and risk factors.
Main Results:
- Malignancy and nephrolithiasis were primary indications (79.2%).
- Infectious diseases were associated with younger age, female gender, diabetes, and prior pyelonephritis.
- PCN placement showed a low complication rate (0.06%) in infected patients.
Conclusions:
- PCN is a safe and effective procedure for urinary tract infections with obstructed drainage.
- The study highlights the utility of PCN in managing complicated UTIs.
