    Summary

    Intentional hydrocarbon inhalation, such as spray paint abuse, can cause significant obstructive lung disease. Some lung function abnormalities may improve with bronchodilator treatment.

    Background:

    • Intentional hydrocarbon inhalation is a form of substance abuse.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To assess the impact of intentional spray paint inhalation on pulmonary function.
    • To determine if bronchodilators can alleviate observed lung function abnormalities.

    Main Methods:

    • A preliminary study was conducted on ten spray paint abusers.
    • Pulmonary function testing (PFT) included flow studies, lung volumes, diffusing capacity, and airway resistance.
    • PFT was repeated after exercise provocation, with bronchodilator response assessed in a subset.

    Main Results:

    • 90% of subjects exhibited an obstructive ventilatory pattern.
    • Seven subjects showed increased airway resistance pre-exercise.
    • Five subjects experienced increased residual volume post-exercise.
    • Five of six subjects improved obstruction after bronchodilator administration.

    Conclusions:

    • Intentional spray paint inhalation is associated with significant pulmonary function abnormalities.
    • Obstructive patterns and increased airway resistance are common findings.
    • Bronchodilator therapy may offer symptomatic improvement for affected individuals.
