Is endoscopy hazardous to your liver?

R L Koretz, K Chin

    Digestive Diseases and Sciences

    Summary

Gastrointestinal endoscopists show low rates of hepatitis B exposure, similar to the general population. Endoscopic experience did not correlate with hepatitis B markers in this healthcare worker survey.

    Area of Science:

    • Gastroenterology
    • Hepatology
    • Occupational Health

    Background:

    • Hepatitis B virus (HBV) poses a risk to healthcare workers.
    • Assessing HBV exposure in gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy professionals is crucial for occupational safety.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To determine the seroprevalence of hepatitis B exposure markers among members of a gastrointestinal endoscopy society.
    • To investigate the correlation between endoscopic experience and hepatitis B exposure.

    Main Methods:

    • A survey was distributed to 92 members (84% response rate) of a GI endoscopy society.
    • Serum specimens were collected to test for hepatitis B markers and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels.

    Main Results:

    • 12% of participants showed serologic evidence of previous hepatitis B exposure.
    • 3% had abnormal ALT determinations.
    • No significant correlation was found between hepatitis B exposure and the extent of endoscopic experience.

    Conclusions:

    • Hepatitis B exposure rates in GI endoscopists are comparable to the general population and low-risk healthcare workers.
    • Routine endoscopy practice does not appear to increase the risk of hepatitis B exposure.
