Background:

  • Unilateral cranial cruciate ligament disease is a common cause of lameness in dogs.
  • Objective measurement of stifle function is crucial for assessing disease severity and recovery.
  • Existing methods may be complex or inaccessible for routine clinical use.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and validate a quantitative Stifle Function Score (SFS) for dogs with unilateral cranial cruciate ligament disease.
  • To compare the SFS with a Symmetry Index (SI) derived from ground reaction forces (GRFs).
  • To test the hypothesis that SFS strongly correlates with SI.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of dogs with cranial cruciate ligament rupture (surgically and non-surgically treated) and healthy controls were evaluated.
  • The SFS was developed incorporating 14 clinical and functional parameters.
  • Dogs underwent gait analysis on a force platform to calculate the SI based on vertical GRFs.

Main Results:

  • Twenty-seven dogs (21 with disease, 6 controls) were included. The mean SFS was 71.5/100.
  • A strong negative correlation (r = -0.863, p < 0.0001) was found between SFS and SI.
  • Most SFS components correlated significantly with SI, except for pain response and stifle flexion.

Conclusions:

  • The developed SFS demonstrates strong agreement and correlation with objective SI measurements from GRFs.
  • The SFS is a potentially valuable, simple, and cost-effective clinical tool.
  • This score can aid in monitoring the progression of recovery in dogs undergoing rehabilitation for cranial cruciate ligament rupture.
