    Summary

A rare S-100 protein-positive peripheral T-cell lymphoma was identified in a young boy. This aggressive lymphoma presented with thrombocytopenia and splenomegaly, leading to a rapid, fatal outcome.

    Area of Science:

    • Immunology
    • Oncology
    • Pathology

    Background:

    • T lymphocytes are crucial immune cells.
    • S-100 protein expression is typically associated with certain cell types, not commonly T cells.

    Observation:

    • A case study details a 12-year-old boy with thrombocytopenia and splenomegaly.
    • Malignant lymphoma involved para-aortic lymph nodes, spleen, and bone marrow.

    Findings:

    • The lymphoma was identified as S-100 protein-positive peripheral T-cell lymphoma.
    • Immunophenotyping revealed a specific T-cell profile (T1+, T3+, T4+, T6-, T8-, T11+).
    • Lymph node involvement showed a sinusoidal pattern.

    Implications:

    • This case expands the understanding of S-100 protein expression in T-cell lymphomas.
    • Highlights the importance of immunophenotyping in diagnosing rare hematologic malignancies.
    • Suggests aggressive clinical behavior for S-100-positive peripheral T-cell lymphoma.
