The interferon-gamma inducible protein 16 (IFI16) protein partners with the constitutive heterochromatin machinery to maintain Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) latency. Disruption of this latency involves rapid downregulation of IFI16 transcription, revealing a novel antiviral mechanism.
