    Background:

    • Lateral eye movements (LEMs) are associated with cognitive processes.
    • The role of eye position in information retrieval is not fully understood.
    • Existing research has not consistently examined encoding and retrieval phases together.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate whether eye-position-dependent facilitation impacts information retrieval.
    • To determine if consistent visual fixation points during encoding and retrieval enhance recall.
    • To explore the relationship between lateral eye movements and memory performance.

    Main Methods:

    • Sixty student volunteers participated in the study.
    • Participants encoded and retrieved verbally presented word pairs while fixating at various points (straight ahead, 20/40 degrees left/right).
    • Response latency was measured to assess retrieval efficiency.

    Main Results:

    • Significantly longer response latencies for difficult word pairs when encoding and retrieval points differed (p < .05).
    • A facilitation effect was observed, particularly in subjects with nondirectional LEM preference.
    • Rightward gaze during retrieval showed shorter latency when encoding and retrieval points differed (p < .001), but not when they were the same.

    Conclusions:

    • Eye-position-dependent facilitation plays a role in information retrieval.
    • Consistent visual fixation points during encoding and retrieval can enhance memory performance.
    • Future LEM studies should incorporate both encoding/retrieval phases and individual subject variables.
