Changes in Skin Color: Clinical Perspectives01:14

Changes in Skin Color: Clinical Perspectives

2.1K
The first thing a clinician sees is the skin, so the examination of the skin should be part of any thorough physical examination. Most skin disorders are relatively benign, but a few, including melanomas, can be fatal if untreated. A couple of the more noticeable disorders, albinism and vitiligo, affect the appearance of the skin and its accessory organs.
Albinism
Albinism is a genetic disorder that affects (completely or partially) the coloring of skin, hair, and eyes. The defect is primarily...

Open Angle Glaucoma: Treatment01:27

Open Angle Glaucoma: Treatment

534
In open-angle glaucoma, the iridocorneal angle remains open, but the trabecular meshwork becomes stiff, slowing down the outflow of aqueous humor. This causes a buildup of aqueous humor in the anterior chamber, leading to a sudden increase in intraocular pressure. The treatment for open-angle glaucoma focuses on reducing the elevated intraocular pressure by either decreasing the secretion of aqueous humor or increasing its outflow.
Drugs such as carbonic anhydrase inhibitors, α2- and...

Angle Closure Glaucoma: Treatment

632
Angle-closure glaucoma, or closed-angle glaucoma, is an eye condition where the iris bulges out and blocks the iridocorneal angle, resulting in a buildup of aqueous humor and increased intraocular pressure. Immediate medical attention is necessary due to the sudden onset of symptoms. The treatment for angle-closure glaucoma includes short-term and long-term approaches. Short-term treatment involves using eye drops like pilocarpine to lower intraocular pressure by increasing aqueous humor...

Prosopagnosia01:24

Prosopagnosia

240
Prosopagnosia, also known as face blindness, is the inability to recognize faces. In severe cases, individuals with prosopagnosia may not recognize close family members, including parents and spouses, by their faces. For instance, someone with prosopagnosia might walk past their child in a crowd, only realizing their mistake upon noticing their child's distinctive backpack or favorite jacket. Prosopagnosia specifically impairs facial recognition, while the recognition of other objects or...

Glaucoma: Overview01:25

Glaucoma: Overview

705
Glaucoma is an eye condition characterized by increased intraocular pressure that damages the retina and optic nerve, leading to irreversible blindness if left untreated. The human eye has various components, including the cornea, iris, pupil, lens, and optic nerve. Aqueous humor is secreted by the epithelium of the ciliary body in the posterior chamber and flows through the trabecular meshwork and canal of Schlemm, maintaining normal intraocular pressure. The trabecular meshwork and the canal...

Summary

Non-segmental vitiligo patients show increased ocular changes compared to healthy individuals. Despite these changes, visual acuity remains unaffected in vitiligo patients.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Dermatology
  • Genetics

Background:

  • Vitiligo is an autoimmune skin disorder characterized by melanocyte destruction.
  • Melanocytes are crucial for pigmentation in both skin and ocular tissues.
  • Shared embryological origins link epidermal and uveal tract melanocytes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the prevalence of ocular alterations in patients with non-segmental vitiligo.
  • To assess potential connections between vitiligo and eye health.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 40 non-segmental vitiligo patients and 40 healthy controls was studied.
  • Ophthalmological examinations included visual acuity testing, slit lamp examination, and optical coherence tomography.

Main Results:

  • Patients with non-segmental vitiligo exhibited a significantly higher incidence of ocular alterations compared to controls.
  • No statistically significant difference in visual acuity was observed between the vitiligo group and the control group.

Conclusions:

  • Vitiligo is a systemic condition impacting melanocytes beyond the skin, including ocular tissues.
  • Ocular changes are associated with vitiligo, though they do not impair vision.
  • Ocular melanocyte involvement in vitiligo highlights the systemic nature of the disease.
