M G Poulsen, S J Roberts

International Journal of Radiation Oncology, Biology, Physics
    |July 1, 1987

    Summary

This study on endometrial carcinoma found 5- and 10-year survival rates of 83% and 80%. Key prognostic factors for early-stage disease include tumor differentiation and myometrial invasion.

    Area of Science:

    • Gynecologic Oncology
    • Clinical Epidemiology

    Background:

    • Endometrial carcinoma is a common gynecologic malignancy.
    • Understanding long-term outcomes and prognostic factors is crucial for patient management.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the long-term survival and recurrence patterns of endometrial carcinoma.
    • To identify independent prognostic variables for early-stage disease.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective analysis of 1005 patients with histologically confirmed endometrial carcinoma.
    • Data collected from January 1960 to December 1976.
    • Actuarial survival and recurrence site analysis performed.

    Main Results:

    • Overall 5- and 10-year survival rates were 83% and 80%, respectively.
    • Recurrence developed in 14% of patients, with common sites including pelvis and lungs.
    • No myometrial penetration and poorly differentiated tumors were significant independent prognostic factors for clinical Stage I adenocarcinoma.

    Conclusions:

    • Endometrial carcinoma demonstrated favorable long-term survival in this cohort.
    • Tumor characteristics like myometrial invasion and differentiation are critical for predicting outcomes in early-stage disease.
