Summary

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) patients exhibit higher plasma neprilysin and insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) levels than healthy individuals. Neprilysin levels did not differ between obese and non-obese PCOS patients.

  • Elevated neprilysin levels are linked to insulin resistance, suggesting a potential role in PCOS pathophysiology.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate plasma neprilysin levels in women with PCOS.
  • To examine the relationship between plasma neprilysin and endocrine/metabolic characteristics in PCOS patients.

Main Methods:

  • A case-control study involving 35 premenopausal women with PCOS and 35 age-matched healthy controls.
  • Measurement of demographic data, biochemical and hormonal parameters, and plasma neprilysin levels.

Main Results:

  • PCOS patients showed significantly higher HOMA-IR values (3.3 ± 1.8) compared to controls (1.6 ± 1).
  • Plasma neprilysin levels were significantly elevated in the PCOS group (1502.1 ± 1641.2 pg/mL) versus controls (764.6 ± 562.6 pg/mL).
  • No significant difference in plasma neprilysin was observed between overweight/obese and non-obese PCOS patients.

Conclusions:

  • PCOS is characterized by significantly higher plasma neprilysin and HOMA-IR levels compared to controls.
  • Plasma neprilysin levels are not significantly influenced by obesity status in PCOS patients.
